How Long Does a Car Inspection Take?

Car Safety Iinspection timeline

Vehicle inspection is an important part of owning a car, but this activity comes along with uncertainty. Will you spend your whole afternoon there, or will you just wait at the office? This question appears almost every time our customers drop by. They hand us their keys and ask us how much time will they have to wait until we give them the car back. There is no definite timeframe because every vehicle and situation is unique, and some drivers also come in with concerns like their car isn't beeping when locked.

So, how long does a car inspection take? Knowing the factors that impact this can save your time and relieve you of extra stress. At Arrowhead Imports, we always make sure our clients leave satisfied with the services they have received. Let us tell you what to expect from a visit to a trusted local auto repair shop. We will share with you what factors determine the duration of the evaluation so that nothing catches you unprepared. We understand how important your time is, and we do everything possible to get you back home quickly and safely.

What Decides the Length of a Car Inspection?

There are many different variables that influence the duration of the inspection.

Inspection Type

Firstly, it depends on the type of inspection. The specific type defines what exactly we have to check. There is a difference between basic safety tests and comprehensive bumper-to-bumper assessments. We adapt to the requirements that you have set or those defined by the law of the location. The process is not the same and therefore takes different timeframes. How long does it take to inspect a car? This is the first variable.

Vehicle Age and Condition

The second influential factor is the age and condition of the automobile that needs an inspection. Newer models tend to pass the tests very quickly because all of their components still function perfectly. Old automobiles require a more thorough analysis.

Our specialists will have to inspect your car for rust, damaged belts, or worn-out suspension parts that become visible after years of use. If we detect something that can potentially affect your safety, we will have to conduct an investigation to protect you from unexpected troubles on the road. A good maintenance of the automobile makes the process quick.

Auto Repair Shop

Thirdly, it all depends on the shop. For instance, we cannot say exactly whether your visit will last longer if you come morning or afternoon. You have probably noticed that the bays at an auto repair shop are often busy. It happens especially if you pay us a visit on Monday mornings or at the end of the month. Most people prefer to get their inspection sticker updated at the last minute, which is also when they start asking…how long does it take to get your car inspected?

Duration Estimates by Inspection Type

We suggest considering average timeframe of the most common types of car inspections.

Routine Safety Inspection

Annual safety tests have to be performed by law to ensure that your automobile passes all necessary criteria. These are your brakes, tires, lights, steering mechanism, and windshield wipers. The usual car inspection time for such an assessment is anywhere from thirty to forty-five minutes.

When your automobile has been maintained well, we can finish even earlier. But if our mechanics will have to remove the tires, it will take us longer. If we detect some safety violations, this time will naturally be increased due to the discussion of the repair options with you.

Emissions Test/Smog Test

This inspection evaluates the negative impact of your exhaust system on the environment. Using special diagnostics devices, we analyze the level of the pollutants it releases. It relies on the data obtained via computer diagnostics, so this type of test is the quickest thing we offer. You will probably spend anywhere from fifteen to thirty minutes on it. If the check engine light appears, your inspection will fail, and we will have to spend extra time analyzing your engine's diagnostics code.

Pre-Purchase Inspection

If you want to buy a used car, you should definitely bring it to our shop for an inspection before signing a purchase contract. We will put your automobile on the lift, take it for a test drive, and perform a deep analysis of its engine, transmission, fluid levels, and condition of the body.

Since we want to protect you from a bad purchase, the estimated timeframe could be from one to two hours. Nevertheless, we will provide you with a detailed report that will relieve your concerns about future problems with your automobile.

Keeping Your Car Safe

Spending time waiting in the office is not that annoying when you know that your safety is at stake. Do not let your impatience affect the result because ignoring or hurrying up the evaluation will cost you. We care about our customers and therefore try to conduct the process efficiently. We always make sure that your automobile is in order before we give you the keys back.

To minimize your waiting time, we strongly recommend making an appointment beforehand. A phone call will help us prepare for your arrival in advance and guarantee you a dedicated mechanic as well as a designated bay. We are available anytime. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need a safety inspection or if you are going to buy a used car and want to make sure that there will be no surprises later!
